The Linguistic Society of America‘s Executive Committee has approved an Ethics Statement, which is available through the LSA website as a pdf. The document describes itself as offering a “basic ethical framework for linguists of all subdisciplines,” providing them with “guidance for making ethical choices.” It includes sections on responsibilities to individual research participants, to communities, to students and colleagues, to scholarship and to the public. The acknowledgments note the American Folklore Society and AAA ethics codes.
For an analysis of the LSA Ethics Statement, see today’s Inside Higher Ed article “An Ethics First” by Scott Jaschik. The article includes comments from AAA member Lise M. Dobrin (U Virginia), of the LSA Ethics Committee. To learn more about the AAA Committee on Ethics, see our website.
