BBC News reported that a senior UN official is travelling to Australia to investigate complaints by Aboriginal communities about racial discrimination. The complaints stem from the government’s suspension of anti-discrimination laws in an effort to combat rising child abuse rates. These efforts have proven unsuccessful as the gap in domestic violence between indigenous and non-indigenous citizens has continued to increase. Activists argue that the government’s actions violate the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

More on the UN Special Rapporteur’s trip to Australia, along with their mandate can be found on the Indigenous Peoples Issues and Resources: Australia site. I hope he looks into the Alice Springs Town Camp removals taking place in the Northern Territory.
