If you’re considering entering the 2009 AAA Photo Contest, there are number of things to keep in mind when selecting photos. The first tip I want to share is to remember that each photo is evaluated individually.

Entrants can submit up to five photos, but if you submit a series of photos, be sure that each image can also be understood on its own. For example, 2008 contest winner Peter Biella was recognized for two photos:  Mama Toreto and Toreto’s Courtyard. Clearly the images are related, but the photos and accompanying captions are also strong on their own.

If you have multiple photos that you think would benefit from being viewed as a set, you are also welcome to submit a photo essay proposal to Anthropology News at any time. Stay tuned for more photo contest tips, and remember to submit your entry by October 1st.
