Anthropology Students Organize for Human Rights

Volunteer members of the AAA and Student/Farmworker Alliance are collecting signatures for a petition against Aramark, a professional services company that provides food services for schools, universities, and businesses throughout the US. The petition protests Aramark’s alleged failure to address human rights abuses in its food supply chain. The students write, “Florida tomato pickers have received the same wage (about 45 cents per 32-pound bucket of tomatoes) for 30 years. They receive no overtime pay despite 10-14-hour workdays, receive no health benefits of any kind, and are denied the right to organize to change these conditions. In the most extreme cases, workers are forced to work against their will under the threat or use of physical violence.”

The petition, to be delivered in person during the AAA’s annual meeting in Philadelphia, calls on Aramark to partner with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a farmworker advocacy organization, to improve the wages and working conditions of workers.  To learn more or sign the petition, visit http://www.thepetitionsite.com/3/accountability-for-aramark
