Those with any lingering hope that Harvard medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer would be appointed as the new head of USAID will be disappointed to learn that Rajiv Shah–Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics and Chief Scientist at the US Department of Agriculture–will lead the agency. Shah, only 36, previously served as the director of agricultural development and managed a $1.5 billion vaccine fund for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Although there are concerns about his youth, many are confident in his ability to bring change to an agency that has often been criticized for its lack of leadership, accountability, and coordination.

What a huge disappointment that Dr. Farmer will not head USAID. This man has done phenomenal work around the globe to further the welfare of poor, sick people no matter where they were born. I was hopeful that all of you would be able to rise above any petty non-issues and see his value. Pamela Higdon
