NPR has posted online a Feb 26 story on “Haitian Creole for the Haitian Recovery,” a new language course at Duke University organized by languages professor Deborah Jenson. The students enrolled come from a wide range of backgrounds, and include undergraduates, graduates, professors and community members.
The short radio story features comments from UNC anthropology PhD student Laura Wagner, who was completing fieldwork in Haiti at the time of the earthquake, and was rescued from a collapsed residence. Wagner commented on the course, which she is co-teaching, “I would like for people to go in with a nuanced and human view of Haitian people as something other than objects of help and intervention.”
