AN Biotechnology Proposals Due Sept 16

The proposal deadline for the Anthropology News series on biotechnology has been extended. The new submission deadline is September 16.

Developments in biotechnology continue to change the way people live—sometimes with positive results, sometimes with negative repercussions, and sometimes unclear consequences. Discoveries in medicine, genetics and agriculture can transform expectations and possibilities in health care, food security and more. For the January 2012 issue of Anthropology News, we invite proposals for essays exploring biotechnology and anthropology.

Possible starting questions include, but are not limited to:

  • How are people adopting biotechnological innovations?
  • What are the relationships between the uses and consequences of particular developments?
  • What more can be done to help address humanity’s most urgent needs, such as the lack of food security?
  • What ethical implications arise from certain developments?

To participate, email a 300-word abstract and 50–100-word biosketch to AN Managing Editor Amy Goldenberg. We welcome proposals from current AAA members for In Focus commentaries, Teaching Strategies articles, Field Notes pieces, photo essays, photo features, news stories, interviews and more. Proposals for photo essays should also include up to five high resolution photographs (tiff or jpg), each with a caption and credit. Multimedia submissions are encouraged for online publication on the new AN website (which launched September 1). Contributions selected as exclusive online content for www.anthropology-news.org can be up to 1,500 words, with flexible space for supplemental artwork and other supporting files. Final contributions for print AN will be 1,100–1,300 words in length for commentaries and shorter for other contribution types.
