NEH Needs Your Support

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-KY) announced plans for a Continuing Resolution that would reduce spending by $74 billion below President Obama’s 2011 budget request for the remainder of the year.  This proposal would cut over $12 million from the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH)!

As one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the US, NEH provides critical support for research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities through grants to a wide range of educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and scholars nationwide.

Write to your representative today to let members of Congress know WHY the humanities and NEH are important to you, their constituent.

New Reports Released on the State of US Education

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education, has released The Condition of Education 2010. The report presents 49 indicators on the status of education in the US (supplemented by online resources). This year it includes a special section on high-poverty schools. See the NCES website to access the report.

A few weeks ago, the Commission on the Future of Graduate Education in the US released the report The Path Forward: The Future of Graduate Education in the United States. The report notes, “Much of the policy on enhancing innovation and competitiveness has focused on STEM [science, technology, engineering, and mathematics] fields, but awareness of the role of the humanities in our national culture is increasing, including its impact on ethics and values, vitality, and competitiveness…”
